Chair | Medical Training Initiative (MTI) Committee

The Medical Training Initiative Committee is responsible for overseeing the educational standards and quality assurance of the MTI Scheme.

The MTI Committee receives applications, monitors progression, retention rates and outcome information relating to MTI trainees to inform the College and wider MTI strategy. The Committee develops and delivers an induction programme, educational resources and support networks for MTI trainees and placement hospitals that best advance MTI training in the UK. The Committee reports to the Specialty Education Advisory Committee (SEAC), Education Board and informs the Global Health Board.

Responsibilities of the Chair role include:  

  • Oversee the educational standards and quality assurance of the MTI scheme
  • Identify appropriate training placements for MTI trainees to undertake the MTI scheme, ensuring placements meet the accepted standards of training and educational support
  • Promote and develop the RCOG MTI scheme in line with the philanthropic aims in advancing global health and patient safety standards 

MTI Committee meets three times a year remotely.  This appointment is for a three-year term, commencing in May 2026, and will be appointed by interview.  UK Fellows and Members in a current substantive post at consultant level are eligible to apply for this position.

Chair, Medical Training Initiative (MTI) Committee

Three years, commencing May 2026

The Medical Training Initiative Committee is responsible for overseeing the educational standards and quality assurance of the MTI Scheme. The MTI Committee receives applications, monitors progression, retention rates and outcome information relating to MTI trainees to inform the College and wider MTI strategy. The Committee develops and delivers an induction programme, educational resources and support networks for MTI trainees and placement hospitals that best advance MTI training in the UK. The Committee reports to the Specialty Education Advisory Committee (SEAC), Education Board and informs the Global Health Board.  

The Chair of the MTI Committee is to provide educational oversight and delivery of the Scheme. 

  • Oversee the educational standards and quality assurance of the MTI Scheme and deliverables of the Committee
  • Chair three virtual meetings a year
  • Promote the MTI Scheme to NHS hospitals across the four countries of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and to the global membership, ensuring parity between International Medical Graduates of all nationalities
  • Identify appropriate training placements for MTI trainees to undertake the MTI scheme, ensuring placements meet the accepted standards of training and educational support
  • Oversee, review and advise on the MTI eligibility criteria, applications process and short listing / wait listing process for MTI recruitment
  • Support and work alongside the RCOG MTI Regional Champions to standardise educational standards and support across regions including a centralised Annual Review of Competencies (ARC) process for MTI trainees
  • Develop and deliver an MTI induction programme, MTI educational resources, MTI Annual meeting with trainees and MTI support networks for MTI trainees and placement hospitals that best advance MTI training
  • Consult with MTI stakeholders including current and past MTI trainees, placement hospitals and Regional Champions to obtain feedback in order to identify areas where support or improvement is needed to the scheme
  • With the Committee support, set the agendas and ensure that decisions taken are properly and effectively followed up and completed
  • Represent the Committee at the SEAC, Education Board and Global Health Board
  • In conjunction with RCOG staff, contribute to reports on the committee and Scheme’s activities
  • Recommend and contribute to future Committee appointments  

The MTI Committee and Scheme works with a wide range of UK and international stakeholders including College educational committees, Global Health and MTI trainees. 

The Chair of the MTI Committee has responsibility to oversee and deliver the prestigious MTI Scheme and has the opportunity to network with a wide range of stakeholders including the College structures. 

The MTI Scheme requires regular input and decisions from the Chair to ensure that the educational standards and delivery of the Scheme is achieved. 

The Committee meets three times per year, and the Chair will also be expected to represent the Committee at the quarterly SEAC, Education Board and Global Health Board meetings. 

There will also be a commitment outside of the meetings to deal with Committee matters. 

This role reflects the present requirements of the post. As duties and responsibilities change and develop the role description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder.   

Person specification

Essential  

  • Registered with a licence to practise with the GMC, in good standing 
  • FRCOG/MRCOG 
  • Current substantive post at Consultant, SAS or senior locally employed doctor in obstetrics and/or gynaecology in UK NHS practice  
  • Evidence of annual appraisal 
  • Evidence of equal opportunities and diversity training within previous three years 
  • Recognised Clinical or Educational Supervisor 

Desirable 

  • Quality assurance qualification or evidence of training   

Essential  

  • Knowledge of the MTI Scheme
  • Experience of taking part in quality assurance processes in education
  • Experience of and understanding of GMC Regulatory System 
  • Experience of quality management processes 

Desirable  

  • Experienced external visitor for quality assurance processes (visits, ARCPs) 
  • Can evidence effecting change through a QA process  
  • Good understanding of the principles of quality assurance and governance 
  • Excellent knowledge of the MTI Scheme 
  • Able to pay great attention to detail as well as ability to view the bigger picture 
  • Be aware of current educational developments both in O&G and in postgraduate medical education more generally 
  • Be aware of the requirements of the GMC in relation to the quality assurance of postgraduate medical education 
  • Clear demonstration of a commitment to improving women’s health  
  • Good communicator  
  • Agreement from host organisation to be released to fulfil role

Committee Chair/Member/Course Convenors and Organisers

If within your committee role or work as course convenor or organiser you gain knowledge which enhances patient care or leadership and technical skills (including, for example, giving presentations, teaching sessions or mock examining) credits can be claimed as an ‘Experiential Learning Event’.

CPD users can now freely select and record the number of credits for all their CPD activities. For Experiential Learning Events, a Reflection is required to claim the selected credits. In addition, 1 or 2 credits can be claimed for an action following the learning (1 credit for a simple action, 2 credits for a complex action). To claim credits for an action, the individual needs to demonstrate how they have applied their learning to their practice, the service they provide and/or the potential impact of the learning.

For those who prefer to follow RCOG recommendations, the CPD Framework still provides a suggested number of credits that can be claimed for different CPD activities.

The committee shall be supported by the International Education & Quality Coordinator.
