Member, Subspecialty Committee (Urogynaecology)

Chair of the Subspecialty Training Committee (SSTC)

This appointment will begin from May 2026 for a duration of two years.

The Subspecialty Committee is responsible for the development of subspecialisation in the four subspecialties (Gynaecological Oncology, Maternal and Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Medicine and Urogynaecology). This includes monitoring the criteria and procedures for approval of subspecialty trainees, training centres and training programmes and for subspecialist accreditation on completion of training. The Committee provides feedback to subspecialty training programme supervisors, subspecialty trainees and Heads of Schools on progress of trainees based on information submitted in the assessors’ report following the centralised subspecialty assessments.

The Committee is also responsible to ensure that the curricula, requirements for training and the various application and assessment forms are updated appropriately. The Committee reports to the Specialty Education Advisory Committee and consists of two subspecialists from each subspecialty field, a Heads of School’s representative and a Subspecialty Trainees’ representative.

  1. Review registration documents for urogynaecology trainee appointments, providing feedback and decisions within a set deadline.
  2. Working with your fellow subspecialty representative, lead on urogynaecology subspecialty training centre reviews, ensuring centres are appropriate and can adhere to the subspecialty curriculum.
  3. Bring specific expertise and insight from the urogynaecology specialty, ensuring the committee is aware of pertinent specialty related updates, actions and developments.
  4. Take part in all decision-making related to the work of the Committee.
  5. Engage in committee discussions to ensure Subspecialty Training procedures, guidelines and curriculums are fit for purpose and representative of women's health needs.
  6. Be the link between Subspecialty Committee and the relevant Specialist Society, escalating to the committee and the specialist society as required.
  7. Lead on dedicated activities pertaining to the Urogynaecology subspecialty when the need arises, as requested by the Chair.
  8. Attend Subspecialty Committee meetings on a regular basis and engage in bi-annual Subspecialty Training Programme Assessments as a panel member.

As a Subspecialty Training Committee member, you will be expected to work closely with the RCOG Specialty Education Manager and the Chair of the committee.

More widely, the Subspecialty Committee will work with the Specialty Education Advisory Committee, the Special Interest Training Committee, the Curriculum Committee and Heads of Schools.

Acting as a committee member with a focus in Urogynaecology is a busy yet rewarding role. Frequent communication via email with the Specialty Education Manager should be expected, with up to four trainee registration approvals per month, alongside frequent reviews of training centre documents. Applicants should therefore expect to dedicate two to three days per month to this role.

This role reflects the present requirements of the post. As duties and responsibilities change and develop the role description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder. The role description will be re-evaluated at the end of the term.

CPD information

Information about the RCOG CPD Framework can be found here.

Committee Chair/Member/Course Convenors and Organisers

If within your committee role or work as course convenor or organiser you gain knowledge which enhances patient care or leadership and technical skills (including, for example, giving presentations, teaching sessions or mock examining) credits can be claimed as an ‘Experiential Learning Event’.

CPD users can now freely select and record the number of credits for all their CPD activities. For Experiential Learning Events, a Reflection is required to claim the selected credits. In addition, 1 or 2 credits can be claimed for an action following the learning (1 credit for a simple action, 2 credits for a complex action). To claim credits for an action, the individual needs to demonstrate how they have applied their learning to their practice, the service they provide and/or the potential impact of the learning.

For those who prefer to follow RCOG recommendations, the CPD Framework still provides a suggested number of credits that can be claimed for different CPD activities.

Further information can be found in the RCOG CPD Framework document.
