Vice Chair | Curriculum Committee

The Curriculum Committee is responsible for the regular and systematic review of all modules of the core, advanced, subspecialty and academic specialty curricula. The Committee works with other committees in the development of the curricula (Subspecialty Committee and Academic Board).

Responsibilities of the Vice Chair role include to support the Chair with:

  • Chairing Committee meetings  
  • Reporting to the Specialty Education Advisory Committee  
  • Ensuring that the terms of reference (remit) of the Curriculum Committee are fulfilled 
  • Ensuring that Curriculum Committee members fulfil the terms of their appointment Advising on the selection of Curriculum Committee members 
  • Reviewing RCOG submissions to GMC (Curriculum Approval Group – CAG) 

The Committee will review changes to the Women’s Health module of the Foundation Programme and provides evidence of review and quality management required by the GMC, works to their standards and prepares all curriculum revisions for submission to the GMC on behalf of the Education Board.  

Curriculum Committee meets four times a year remotely. This appointment is for a three-year term beginning May 2026 and will be appointed by interview. UK Fellows and Members in a current substantive post at consultant level are eligible to apply for this position.

Curriculum Committee Vice Chair  

Specialty Education Advisory Committee  

The Curriculum Committee is responsible for the regular and systematic review of all modules of the core, advanced, subspecialty and academic specialty curricula. The Committee works with other committees in the development of the curricula (Subspecialty Committee and Academic Board). The Committee will review changes to the Women’s Health module of the Foundation Programme. The Committee provides evidence of review and quality management required by the GMC, working to their standards and prepares all curriculum revisions for submission to the GMC on behalf of the Education Board.

Requirements of the Committee are:

  • To monitor that all RCOG curricula are up to date and fit for purpose
  • To coordinate curriculum changes for GMC approval
  • To review any request for curricula additions, amendments and removals  
  • Chair Committee meetings in absence of chair
  • Report to the Specialty Education Advisory Committee as required
  • Ensure that the terms of reference (remit) of the Curriculum Committee are fulfilled
  • Ensure that Curriculum Committee members fulfil the terms of their appointment

This role reflects the present requirements of the post. As duties and responsibilities change and develop the role description will be reviewed and be subject to amendment in consultation with the post holder.

Person specification

Essential  

  • Registered with a licence to practise with the GMC, in good standing
  • FRCOG/MRCOG
  • Current substantive post at Consultant, SAS or senior locally employed doctor in obstetrics and/or gynaecology in UK NHS practice 
  • Evidence of annual appraisal
  • Evidence of equal opportunities and diversity training within previous three years
  • Active involvement in training and education – for example, as a member of a School, College Tutor, Foundation Programme Director, Unit Training Director, etc  
  • Knowledge of educational theory underpinning the construction of training programmes and educational curricula 

Desirable 

  • A qualification in education
  • Knowledge of GMC regulations and requirements for curricula
  • Knowledge of or interest in e-learning and the development of electronic curricula 

 

Essential 

  • An interest in education and training and a thorough approach to the detailed work of a committee
  • Experience in Curriculum training

Committee Chair/Member/Course Convenors and Organisers

If within your committee role or work as course convenor or organiser you gain knowledge which enhances patient care or leadership and technical skills (including, for example, giving presentations, teaching sessions or mock examining) credits can be claimed as an ‘Experiential Learning Event’.

CPD users can now freely select and record the number of credits for all their CPD activities. For Experiential Learning Events, a Reflection is required to claim the selected credits. In addition, 1 or 2 credits can be claimed for an action following the learning (1 credit for a simple action, 2 credits for a complex action). To claim credits for an action, the individual needs to demonstrate how they have applied their learning to their practice, the service they provide and/or the potential impact of the learning.

For those who prefer to follow RCOG recommendations, the CPD Framework still provides a suggested number of credits that can be claimed for different CPD activities.

Terms of reference

The Curriculum Committee is responsible for the content, format and updating of all College curricula – to include core, special interests and subspecialty  

Curriculum Committee will: 

  1. Ensures that the appropriate assessment tools are developed and incorporated into the curriculum framework.
  2. Considers curricular changes and new curricula for all curricula, ensuring that all such changes receive appropriate scrutiny from other college bodies, e.g. Trainees Committee, Women’s Network.
  3. Receives and considers proposed curricular changes from the Special Interest Training Committee and the Subspecialty Committee.
  4. Ensures that, together, all curricula form a coherent programme of learning.
  5. Recommends any changes needed to knowledge criteria for the Core Curriculum to the Examinations and Assessment Committee.
  6. Commissions further curricular elements as requested by the Specialty Education Advisory Committee, or Education Board.  
  7. Prepares curriculum submissions to the GMC on behalf of the Education Board, in conjunction with the Special Interest Training Committee and Subspecialty Committee where appropriate.
  8. Provides the evidence of review, consultation and quality control required by the GMC. The Committee will work to the standards defined by the GMC and those of the Public Sector Equality Duty.
  9. Ensures that all elements of O&G curricula are coherent and up to date  
  10. Responds to requests for elements of all curricula curriculum to be changed in accordance with changes in practice and reflect modern UK developments.  
  11. Works with other College committees to allow an integrated approach across all aspects of the curriculum and training programme.  
  12. Meets four times per year (with remote working groups and workshops as required) and reports to SEAC and carries out ongoing work to develop the curricula.
