Who we are
The BSSVD is a multidisciplinary professional society dedicated to improving standards of care and advancing the understanding, diagnosis and management of vulval disease.
The Society has over 430 active members from a wide range of healthcare disciplines, including dermatology, gynaecology, genitourinary medicine, histopathology, plastic surgery, sexual health, nursing, and other healthcare professionals involved in the diagnosis and management of vulval conditions.
The BSSVD works closely with other specialist societies and patient organisations, including the Vulval Pain Society (VPS), the Primary Care Dermatology Society, the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD), the British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH), and the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), to promote collaboration, share expertise, and ensure patient experiences and priorities inform education, research and clinical practice.
Our objectives
- The relief of patients suffering from vulval disease.
- The promotion of research into vulval diseases with a view to the publication and dissemination of the results.
- The study and practice of the art and science of diagnosing and treating patients with vulval diseases.
What We Do
The BSSVD promotes excellence in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of vulval disease through education, research, collaboration and the dissemination of best practice.
The Society supports healthcare professionals through scientific meetings, educational events, professional resources, research initiatives, and opportunities for the exchange of clinical and scientific knowledge.
The BSSVD encourages multidisciplinary working across specialties and promotes evidence-based approaches to clinical care, with the aim of improving outcomes and experiences for people affected by vulval disease.
The BSSVD promotes research into vulval disease and supports the development and dissemination of evidence to improve clinical care.
How we do this
The BSSVD organises regular scientific meetings and educational events, providing opportunities for members and other healthcare professionals to share knowledge, discuss emerging evidence, and develop best practice in vulval healthcare.
The BSSVD works closely with the RCOG and other specialist societies, including the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD), and promotes cooperation with international organisations such as the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease (ISSVD).
The BSSVD also works collaboratively with patient organisations and support groups to ensure that patient perspectives and priorities remain central to the development of clinical care, research and education.
